A Night of Miracles

Acts 12:1–17

There are moments in life when everything seems to close in around us. We pray, we believe, we stay faithful—and suddenly we find ourselves facing battles we never expected. A sickness. A financial burden. A broken relationship. Anxiety. Fear. Doors that seem permanently shut.

Maybe you feel trapped by circumstances. Maybe you feel like Peter did in Acts chapter 12—bound, surrounded, and out of options.

I want to remind you: God still works miracles in the darkest nights of our lives.

I. The Reality of Dark Nights

Acts 12 tells us that King Herod had begun persecuting the church. James had already been killed, and now Peter was arrested and thrown into prison. Scripture says Peter was guarded by soldiers, chained between them, locked behind iron gates, awaiting execution the next morning.

Humanly speaking, there was no way out. Many of us have stood in places like that spiritually.

You may not be physically chained to a prison wall, but you’ve felt imprisoned by fear, depression, addiction, grief, uncertainty, or discouragement. You’ve looked ahead and seen no solution. You’ve looked around and seen no escape. You’ve looked within and felt powerless.

But sometimes God allows us to come to the end of ourselves so we can finally discover the fullness of His strength.

The Apostle Paul said:

“When I am weak, then I am strong.”

Why? Because when our strength runs out, God’s power begins to move.

II. The Power of Praying People

One of the most powerful verses in this story is Acts 12:5:

“Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.”

Peter was chained. Herod was plotting. The soldiers were guarding. But the church was praying.

Never underestimate the power of praying people. While Peter slept in prison, the church fought for him in prayer. While Herod made plans, heaven was already moving. While darkness surrounded him, God was preparing a miracle.

There are people in this room tonight who are standing because somebody prayed for them. A praying mother. A faithful friend. A church family. A spouse. A grandmother.

Someone kept calling your name before God when you didn’t have strength to pray for yourself. And maybe you need to hear this: As long as prayer is going up, hope is still alive.

III. Peace in the Middle of the Storm

What amazes me most about Peter is that the night before his execution… he was sleeping. He was not panicking, pacing, or breaking down. He was sleeping.

How does a man sleep the night before he is supposed to die? Because Peter understood something: When your life is in God’s hands, nothing can happen outside of God’s plan. That kind of peace only comes from trusting the Lord completely.

Some of us are exhausted because we are carrying burdens God never asked us to carry. God is saying:
“Trust Me with it.”
“Give it to Me.”
“I have not abandoned you.”

Jesus said:

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

You are not alone in your dark night.

IV. The God Who Opens Prison Doors

Then suddenly, everything changed. The Bible says an angel of the Lord entered the prison, and a light shined in the darkness.

The angel struck Peter and said,

“Arise quickly.”

And immediately the chains fell off his hands. Can you imagine that moment? Chains falling. Doors opening. Guards unaware. Iron gates swinging open on their own. That’s the power of God. What man says is impossible, God can change in a single night.

One touch from God can break chains that held you for years. One miracle can change the direction of your family. One answered prayer can open doors no man can shut. The same God who opened Peter’s prison doors still opens doors today.

He still heals. He still restores. He still delivers. He still makes a way where there seems to be no way.

V. God Cares About the Details

I love what the angel told Peter:

“Put on your sandals… wrap your garment around you… and follow me.”

Why would God care about sandals and a coat during a jailbreak? Because God is not only concerned with your miracle—He’s concerned with every detail of your life. Sometimes we think God only cares about the “big” things. But He cares about:

  • your family,

  • your future,

  • your decisions,

  • your calling,

  • your emotions,

  • your fears,

  • your next step.

He is a good Shepherd, and He leads His children carefully.

VI. Your Night Is Not the End

Peter thought the story was over. Herod thought the story was over. The crowd thought the story was over, but God had the final word. God still has the final word over your life. The diagnosis is not the final word. The failure is not the final word. The fear is not the final word. The enemy is not the final word. God is.

Some of you are in the middle of a dark night right now. But hear me clearly:

Your prison is not permanent. Your chains are not eternal. Your story is not finished.

God is still working—even when you cannot see Him.

Maybe you feel weary, trapped, or you’ve been praying for a miracle for a long time.

Don’t stop praying. Don’t stop believing. Don’t stop trusting. Sometimes the greatest miracles happen in the darkest nights.

The light of God still shines in prisons. Chains still fall. Doors still open. And Jesus still leads His people into freedom.

Heavenly Father,
Thank You that You are with us even in our darkest moments. Thank You that no prison is too strong, no chain too heavy, and no situation too impossible for You.

Tonight, strengthen every weary heart. Bring peace to every troubled mind. Open doors that only You can open. Break chains that only You can break.

Remind us that we are never alone and that You are still working miracles today.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
